Alpha Beta Gamma – The best relationship stories of the year

Srikumar Shankar’s debut feature Alpha Beta Gamma is now in theaters after making a splash at the Cannes Film Festival.

This is a film made by an alumnus of FTII, Pune, which has evoked reactions like…

Imagine that during the first coronavirus lockdown, a man was forced to spend 14 days in an apartment with his estranged wife and current boyfriend. That’s the pressure-cooker environment this love story grapples with. “Alpha Beta Gamma” will be released in theaters nationwide on March 8, 2024.

This commendable effort by an alumnus of FTII, Pune tackles a refreshing yet universally relevant topic. It’s no wonder the film has won domestic and international acclaim over the past three years.

Writer-director Srikumar Shankar’s film premiered in November 2022 at the 52nd International Film Festival of India in Goa. “Alpha Beta Gamma” became an official selection of the festival’s Panorama section, and audiences loved this sweet, salty, and engaging relationship drama. The film subsequently attracted attention at several international film festivals, including the Istanbul Ameta Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival.

Writer-director Srikumar Shankar said: “We have a great team; we are all friends and we are trying to present a timeless theme in a new and different way – — love, longing and jealousy. Our film was loved and warmed by audiences around the world.

In 2022, the I&B Department sent “Alpha Beta Gamma” to represent India in the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival. The film will also screen at the 75th Cannes Film Festival later in 2022. “Alpha Beta Gamma” is the only Hindi film among the six Indian films officially screened at the Cannes Film Festival under the auspices of the Indian government. The film received an enthusiastic response at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Alpha Beta Gamma” also won the love of the audience at the TASVEER Film Festival held in Washington, DC, USA. “Tasveer” is the largest South Asian film festival in North America and “Alpha Beta Gamma” is an official entry to the event.

In 2023, the film’s heroine Reena Agrawal won the Best Actor trophy at the Austrian Reactor Film Festival (also serving as an official entry). The festival screened 40 films from around the world, among which “Alpha Beta Gamma” was a great success.

Mona Shankar and Menka Sharma, the film’s female producer duo, said: “All of us, FTII alumni, have worked so hard on this film. Just as audiences at film festivals around the world have appreciated the film, I hope we The audience can also bless our work. The performance of the film in international theaters has enhanced our confidence.”

Alpha Beta Gamma puts a new spin on a very relatable theme, a school crush that blossoms into love and later marriage. Ten years later, the couple grew apart and decided to go their separate ways, but they were not yet divorced. When Chiranjiev (the male protagonist) visits his estranged wife at her request, both of whom have entered into a new relationship, he meets her new boyfriend in her (formerly their) apartment. But before he could retreat, the coronavirus lockdown hit and the three were locked in that apartment for at least 14 days.

That’s when these seemingly mature adults start acting like unreasonable children and sparks fly. This is a slice-of-life movie with a comedic twist. The film stars Reena Agrawal, Nishan Nanya and Amit Kumar Vasisht.
