Canadian pop star Chris Wu has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for rape in China

A Beijing court has sentenced Chinese-born Canadian pop star Chris Wu to 13 years in prison after finding him guilty of rape and other offences.

The Chaoyang district court said the investigation showed that from November to December 2020, Wu, also known as Wu Yifan, raped three women.

The court’s official WeChat account said he was also found guilty of the offense of gathering a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity in July 2018.

It said Wu, 32, would be deported although lawyers are in China has stated that deportation usually occurs after a defendant has served his sentence.

Woo was detained in Beijing 31 July 2021 after an 18-year-old Chinese student publicly accused them Enticing him and other girls, some of whom are under the age of 18, to have sex with him.

According to state media, officials from the Canadian Embassy in Beijing attended the sentencing.

The embassy did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
