Congratulating Anwar, KTMB union says want DAP’s Loke back as transport minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 – The Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (LTMB) workers’ union has appealed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to consider reappointing DAP’s Anthony Locke as Transport Minister.

Union president Abdul Razak Md Hasan claimed that the DAP secretary-general had an excellent track record of overseeing important portfolios as a minister, especially with regard to the welfare of KTMB workers.

“The union would like to appeal to Dato Seri, as Prime Minister, to consider appointing DAP Secretary-General Anthony Locke as Minister of Transport,” the union said in a statement.

“The union’s endorsement is based on Anthony Locke’s track record as then Transport Minister from May 21, 2018 to February 24, 2020. The Union believes that his reappointment will have a positive impact on public transport in general, making it more efficient in particular,” the union added.

This kind of endorsement is rarely done for a politician, especially for someone from the DAP. The move could be seen as a criticism of Locke’s predecessor, Datuk Seri V Ka Siong, who never had the clear support of the union.

The previous administration was heavily criticized for its handling of public transit. Public anger peaked ahead of the 15th general election, when the country’s main rail system suffered a series of breakdowns and disruptions to operations, sparking widespread backlash.
