Currently, the second phase of polling in the state is scheduled to be held on May 7 from 7 am to 6 pm in 14 districts in the northern region. “Due to the uncontrollable high temperature, it is difficult to come out and vote between 10 o’clock and 17 o’clock.”

The average temperature in these districts (north Karnataka), which covers 14 parliamentary constituencies, ranges between 37 and 42 degrees (Celsius). The BJP’s petition said the temperature was rising at alarming levels and it would be difficult for voters to come out and cast their votes.

The petition highlights the alarming rise in temperatures, which are expected to exceed 40C, and points out the large number of voters over 40 who are vulnerable to the effects of heatwaves.

The BJP petition urged the Election Commission to say, “Necessary action should be taken to maintain the good spirit of voting. In this context, it is requested that the polling timings for 14 assembly constituencies be revised from 06:00 to 19:00 in May 7 days of time”.
