Mumbai Indians become first team to be eliminated from IPL 2024 playoffs after SRH defeats LSG in historic win

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians were eliminated from the 2024 Indian Premier League playoffs after Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Lucknow Supergiants on Wednesday. Inconsistent Mumbai had to rely on other teams’ results to keep their playoff hopes alive, but those hopes didn’t last long as SRH had their hopes dashed against LSG in Hyderabad.

Hardik Pandya and Co. beat SRH by 7 wickets in their last match, who knocked them out of the tournament on Wednesday with a 10-wicket win over KL Rahul’s LSG.

MI is currently ninth in the standings and became the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs. However, bottom-placed Gujarat Titans’ chances remain slim as they have played far fewer games than Mumbai.

Pandya’s MI have won just four out of 12 games this season as they failed to produce a collective effort on the field. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, other star players including Rohit Sharma lacked consistency in their performances, which led to the team’s downfall.

Meanwhile, with this win, SRH moved up to third place in the standings with 14 points from 12 games, while LSG were in sixth place with 12 points from the same games.

Earlier, MI managed to stay alive in the match after defeating SRH in the last match but their captain Hardik Pandya was not so sure about the ridiculous maths.

When former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar asked about MI’s chances, Hardik said in his post-match speech: “I don’t know what kind of mathematical situation we are talking about, but at the same time, you want to Focus on playing good cricket going into the next round.

Mumbai have not looked like a consistent team from the first match of the season and the captaincy change has reportedly stoked tensions in the squad. MI’s last IPL match is against Lucknow Supergiants at home on May 17. It will be a matter of time whether the current team management will rest the Indian players who are participating in the T20 World Cup for the remaining matches. Interesting things.
