OpenAI’s ChatGPT will soon be able to search the internet and cite sources in results: What we know

OpenAI may soon launch a feature for its artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT that can search the web and cite sources in the results, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The new features are being introduced to compete more effectively with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and artificial intelligence search startup Perplexity.

What is required for the new ChatGPT functionality?

The new feature will allow users to ask questions to ChatGPT and receive answers, which will use details from the network and references to the source. The sources could be anything from Wikipedia entries to blog posts, the report added.

The product can also use images as well as written answers to relevant questions. For example, if someone asked ChatGPT how to change a light bulb, the results might include results that clearly stated the task.

However, this is not the first time such a development has been reported. In February, The Information reported on a search product being developed by OpenAI.

Discussions on social media about OpenAI search plans

Speculation about OpenAI’s search plans has dominated conversations on social media, as some users on X (formerly Twitter) pointed to the existence of the web page search.chatgpt.com as an indication that OpenAI may be launching a search feature soon.

Although visitors to the URL saw a “not found” message in small font on the page, some claimed they were briefly rerouted to chatgpt.com, the official website where users can interact with the chatbot.
