War on ‘referendum’: India distances itself from resolution against Russia in UN, did not participate in voting

India on Friday abstained from voting on the draft resolution tabled by the US and Albania at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in which Russia The “illegal referendum” and its occupation of Ukrainian territories have been condemned. The resolution demanded that Russia immediately withdraw its forces from Ukraine. The 15 countries of the council were to vote on this resolution, but Russia used a veto against it, due to which the resolution could not be passed. 10 countries voted in support of this resolution and four countries did not participate in the vote.

In fact, Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed 4 regions of Ukraine to Russia, after which tensions have increased in the ongoing war for months. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said that India is deeply disturbed by the recent developments in Ukraine. He emphasized that “dialogue” is the only way to resolve differences and disputes arising after India did not participate in the UN Security Council vote.

‘Differences can be resolved through dialogue’

The draft resolution called for an immediate end to the violence, barring a Russian referendum and annexation of Ukraine’s territories into Russia. India, China, Gabon and Brazil did not participate in voting on this resolution. After not participating in the voting, Kamboj said that all efforts should be made by the concerned members to end the violence immediately. He said that the only way to settle differences and disputes is through dialogue. Only dialogue can resolve differences and disputes, however difficult it may be. At the same time, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday that the occupation of another country’s territory by threat or use of force is a violation of the United Nations Charter and the principles of international law.

The 27 EU member states also said they would never recognize the illegal referendum organized by Russia as an excuse to further violate Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia has included these areas in its country by holding a ‘referendum’ on Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya. Many countries of the world are condemning this move of Russia.

America imposed sanctions on Russia

US President Joe Biden on Friday announced further sanctions on Moscow, including Russian government and military officials and their families, in protest against Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine. Biden said that Russia’s move to annex Ukraine is not legitimate. Russian President Putin has signed treaties to include the territories occupied by Ukraine in his country. In protest, the US imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 people and companies linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including the families of its central bank governors and members of the National Security Council.

Britain also banned the export of new services and goods to Russia on Friday in protest against the illegal annexation of four regions of Ukraine after a “referendum”. The service restrictions are designed to target vulnerable sectors of the Russian economy, including IT consulting, architectural services, engineering services and transactional legal advisory services for certain business activities.
